The main question in education today is how to get our students ready for the future. We don’t know what the future will look like, so we need to think about what kind of learning experiences our students need. We want them to be creative, innovative, and skilful in the future. But how can we make sure that we are teaching them the right things? How can we find new ideas or resources that will help us teach better? These are some of the questions that I and many other teachers ask ourselves often. There is another question that is very important too. How do we get ourselves ready as teachers for the future? Being a teacher is not just about teaching content. We have many other roles and responsibilities in our schools and classrooms. We have to build relationships, support students, and work with other teachers. But one role that is very important for us is being a learner. We have to keep learning new things and trying new things. We have to challenge ourselves and grow as professionals. This is how we can be ready for whatever changes might happen in education and work in the future.
Being an educator is arguably the most noble profession on the face of the earth and I’m sure you remember how much our students defended us against the doctors in inter-school debates. It is clear that educators have the most impact on a child, this makes our role even more delicate. This means we have to prepare ourselves first before we can prepare our learners. A better question then evolves from this point, and that is: What type of learning experiences and activities do educators need? How can we invest in ourselves so that we are constantly learning and growing and capable of providing our students and our colleagues with exactly what they need, as they chart their path towards the uncertainty of the future? If preparing our students means preparing ourselves first. The question now is, how?
Networking is Key
The first thing we need to do to get ready for the future is to connect with other teachers. We can’t work by ourselves anymore. We need to learn from teachers who have different backgrounds and experiences. By making a strong network of teachers, we will have the help and support we need as we try new things and learn about what’s happening in education and the world. Joining a network like RuralED that helps us stay updated and informed by sharing and talking with other teachers is the first step we need to take. This way, we can get out of our comfort zone and grow as educators. The future of education and work will be uncertain and changing. We need to be able to adapt, bounce back, and keep going. We need to create and keep a positive and supportive relationship with our students. A place that is safe, friendly, supportive, and that faces problems and celebrates successes. A chance to learn together and to learn in different and sometimes hard ways.
Be Creative With Teaching
We need to make learning fun and different for our students. This means that we need to try new things and not just do the same old tests and activities. We need to let our students have more choice and voice in what and how they learn. We need to find out some things about our students, like: How do they like to learn? What are they interested in learning? Why do they need to learn certain things or do certain tasks? We need to be okay with letting go of some control and talking with our students about how we learn together. We need to be learners and partners with our students. We also need to make time for ourselves to learn something new that we are passionate about. It can be something related to what we teach or something different that challenges us. This is important because we can show our students why and how they need to keep learning and growing. We can’t just teach what we know and are comfortable with. That limits what our students can learn. We need to be open to taking chances with learning in the classroom and not knowing everything. We give more power to our students when we stop being the only ones who give information and start being learners with them. We can do this by:
- Asking students what they want to learn or are curious about.
- Helping students see learning as a journey.
- Letting students choose their own learning goals.
- Trying new things and letting students make things in the classroom.
- Asking students for ideas on how we can learn better in class.
Employ Project-based Learning
Schools today should help students learn about what they are interested in, how to solve big problems, how to connect with people around the world, and how to choose their own way of learning. We can do this by using different kinds of learning experiences, such as project-based learning (PBL), place-based learning, or experiential learning. We can stop doing the same old projects and instead, look at the resources we have to see how other schools are using these different ways of learning and why they are good for us. With project-based learning or inquiry-based learning, we can let students connect with the community or even the world and find problems or challenges that they care about.
PBL helps students and teachers learn how to think critically, be creative, work together, and solve problems. PBL lets students choose their own way of learning, and it can be very good for teachers to try PBL for themselves too. When we ask students to use a new tool, try a new method, or do an activity, we should be ready to do the same. With place-based learning, we can use the community to make learning more fun and real for our students. But the best way to do this is to think about where our school and community are. This kind of learning can happen anytime, anywhere, and can be influenced by where we are and how we use technology to make learning more personal. Our students need to see how the world works, find challenges that exist, and work on finding solutions. As teachers, we also need to get out of our classrooms and bring in the real world, things that are happening now and matter to us, so our students can connect and do meaningful work.
Seek New Perspectives
We always have something new to learn and we can use technology to find and use many resources to keep learning. Here are some ways to do that: Read blogs or follow topics on social media to learn what’s new and important. Find books that can help you learn more about things like AI, PBL, or the future of education. Look for the top jobs or the skills that are most needed. Go back five years and see what people said about the future. Find articles that say what the future will be like. Think about the skills that you are teaching students and how to keep learning new skills for yourself and them. By knowing or guessing what the jobs and skills will be in the future, we can change how we teach and do more than just teach facts. We have to keep learning and help our students find the right chances because they will make our future. We should not be scared to try new things, especially things that make us learn and grow as teachers. We should connect and keep learning with other teachers, and also with our students. Even though the year is already coming to an end, it is still a good time to learn more in these areas and get ready for the changes in education and work.
Finally, our reward for all these is the beautiful future we create from all these activities. A future where every learner has a place and is relevant. That future is very near!
